Vargas, Warren lift Grizzlies to win

The Grizzlies got a great start from Nick Szczur, three RBIs from Oscar Vargas and a game-winng home run by Phil Warren, as they defeat the Rockford RiverHawks 5-4 Friday night in Rockford, Ill.

The Grizzlies are now 13-22. Rockford is 21-14.

Szcsur went 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned but did not figure into the decsion tonigt.

The Grizzlies broke a 1-1 tie, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Warren and Todd Oetting led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Gary Gilbert drove a ball into the gap to bring in Warren with one out. Vargs followed with a two-run single to right-center and the Grizzlies led 4-1. Szcsur got into some trouble in the bottom half of the inning. Rockford added a run on an error and Szczur left with the bases loaded. Ryan Hamilton came on to end the threat.

In the eighth Hamilton gave up a pair of runs on two hits and a walk to lose the lead.

Warren led off the ninth, with the game tied at 4. Warren lined a pitch over the left field wall to give the Grizzlies the 5-4 lead. Marcus Barriger came on and earned his first save as a Grizzlies. He gave up a hit, and struck out one.

The Grizzlies will look for their second straight series win and a winning road trip when they play the rubber match Saturday night in Rockford. Game time is 7:05. Fans can tune in beginning at 6:50 on 1380 ESPN Radio and the Grizzlies radio network.
