Warren Homers In Ninth, Beats \'Hawks, 5-4

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Veteran Phil Warren led off the top of the ninth inning with a home run and the Gateway Grizzlies beat the Rockford RiverHawks, 5-4.

The RiverHawks' three-game winning streak ended, in front of 2,498 at Marinelli Field.

Gateway rallied for three runs in the seventh inning, two on a Oscar Vargas single to center field, to break a 1-1 tie. The RiverHawks rallied for a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to retie the game. Ashley Farr tripled to right field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to knot it up.

Warren hit his third home run, a high line shot to left, off reliever Curt Borland (0-1).

Gateway reliever Ryan Hamilton (2-1) blew a two-run lead, but won in relief. Marcus Barriger pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save.

The rubber match of the three-game series is at 7:05 p.m. Saturday. Rock Valley College and WXXQ-FM sponsor postgame fireworks. Tickets for the annual Indpendence Day Fireworks Spectacular are hard to come by, so advance purchase is recommended.

The RiverHawks are the defending champions of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 13th season. All games are broadcasted live on WRHL-FM, 102.3 - the Hub.
