ValleyCats' Winning Streak Snapped by IronBirds

Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

ABERDEEN, MD - Third baseman Nick Tanielu went 3-4 with three doubles, and left fielder Derek Fisher went 4-5 with four runs scored, but the Tri-City ValleyCats' fell 7-5 at the hands of the Aberdeen IronBirds, on Sunday. The defeat snapped the 'Cats season-high winning streak at seven games.

Tri-City was able to take an early lead, when Tanielu drove home Fisher with a two-out double in the top of the first. Then, after the IronBirds pulled even in the bottom of the first, the 'Cats took the lead again when right fielder Jose Solano drove home Fisher with an RBI single in the third.

Unfortunately, Aberdeen took the lead for good in the fourth inning, thanks to a two RBI triple by IronBirds designated hitter Riley Palmer, who scored one batter later on a single by teammate Steve Wilkerson.

The ValleyCats were able to cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth inning, when Tanielu drove home Fisher with his second RBI double of the game. However, the IronBirds scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, and once in the seventh, to stretch their lead to 7-3.

Tri-City did make a solid attempt at a comeback with one out in the ninth inning, when Tanielu hit a double to left field, driving in Fisher and Mott Hyde to pull Tri-City within two runs. But IronBirds closer Ivan Hernandez retired Jose Solano and Terrell Joyce to give the ValleyCats their first loss since a 9-2 defeat July 19 against State College.

Despite the setback, Tri-City's 30-13 record leaves them nine games ahead of the Connecticut Tigers for first place in the Stedler Division. They will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow, in game two of this three-game road series in Aberdeen. Getting the start for the ValleyCats is RHP Troy Scribner (5-1, 0.90), whose 50 strikeouts continue to lead all New York-Penn League hurlers. He will face IronBirds LHP Stephen Tarpley (1-1, 5.40).
