Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
Norwich, CT - The Staten Island Yankees (22-21) defeated the Connecticut Tigers (21-22) by a score of 7-1 Sunday evening at Dodd Stadium. In the top of the sixth inning and already leading 3-0, Yankees 3B Renzo Martini (1-4) hit a grandslam off of Tigers RHP Will LaMarche to give Staten Island a commanding seven run lead at 7-0.
The Tigers offense never got it going as they were held to just one run on four hits. The offense which struggled to get base runners on went 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position and left two on base.
With the Tigers trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, 1B Jacob Kapstein lined into a double play which brought in 2B Domingo Leyba (1-3) to score the only run in the game by Connecticut. At one point the Yankees pitching retired 14 straight batters.
Starter RHP Josh Heddinger (0-1) suffered his first loss as a member of the Tigers. Heddinger pitched two innings while allowing one run on one hit, hit two batters and struck out one. RHP Austin Pritcher relieved Heddinger in the third inning and left during the sixth inning after being struck in the back of the head by a line drive from 1B Conner Spencer (3-4). Pritcher left the game and was able to walk back to the dugout on his own.
