Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Ninth Inning Home Run Dooms IronBirds
In a closely contested ballgame, the IronBirds fell to the Connecticut Tigers, 2-0. Offense was hard to come by last night, as both teams had a combined eleven hits. The game stayed tied for eight innings, until Tigers' right fielder Michael Gerber hit a two-run home run to left field in the ninth inning. Luc Rennie got the loss for the IronBirds, his first of the year. Gabe Hemmer earned the win for Connecticut. The Tigers took the series from Aberdeen, winning two of the three games.
Pitching Shines Again
For the second straight day, the IronBirds pitching held the opposing lineup to under three runs. David Hess had one of the best outings of his professional career, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits, no runs, and striking out five. His five strikeouts were a career high. Despite the loss, Luc Rennie also pitched very well in relief, going 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, and striking out five as well. The two runs both came off the ninth inning home run.
RoboCop Stays Hot
Hitting out of the two-hole, Aberdeen catcher Alex Murphy recorded his second straight multi-hit game. Murphy went two for four in last night's game, with a single and a double. He has recorded a hit in four of his last five games and a double in back-to-back games. In his last five games, Murphy is hitting .381 with three RBIs.
The ValleyCats Come to Town
The IronBirds will play host to the Tri-City ValleyCats tonight for the opener of a three-game set. The ValleyCats currently lead the Stedler Division, are on a seven game winning streak, and have won nine of their last ten. Their offense is led by Bobby Boyd, who is ranked second in the New York-Penn League among batters, hitting .368 with eight RBIs on the year.
On the Mound Tonight...
The IronBirds will send LHP John Means to the mound tonight. Means is 0-1 on the year with a 4.82 ERA. In his last start, Means pitched 3.1 innings, allowed nine hits, five earned runs, and struck out two in a loss at Mahoning Valley. He last made a start at Ripken Stadium on July 12, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing four hits, no runs, and striking out one in a 6-1 win over Auburn.
