Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- At 30-12 the Tri-City ValleyCats brought their NY-Penn league-best .714 winning percentage to Aberdeen, but the IronBirds beat the Stedler Division leaders, 7-5.

Unlike the IronBirds most recent games, this one got off to a fast start. John Means got the start for the IronBirds, marking his fourth start of the season. The ValleyCats got on the board in top of the first thanks to a Nick Tanielu RBI double, scoring Derek Fisher from second.

However, the IronBirds responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Jay Gonzalez and Justin Viele both singled, but Gonzalez was forced out at third after an Austin Anderson bunt. With men on first and second, Alex Murphy hit a single that got Anderson out at second, but Mott Hyde made a throwing error to first, allowing Murphy to get to first and Viele to score all the way from second, tying the game at one.

The game followed a similar pattern to that first inning in that the teams would continually exchange runs throughout the night.

The ValleyCats reclaimed their lead in third. After getting two quick outs, Means gave a single to Fisher the second hit of the night. After hitting Nick Tanielu with a pitch, Means gave up an RBI single to Jose Solano, who scored Fisher from second.

After Nik Nowottnick relieved Means and kept the ValleyCats off the board, the IronBirds took the lead in the bottom of the inning. After a Jamill Moquete groundout, Hector Veloz hit a single into right. Oswill Lartiguez followed that up with a single of his own before Riley Palmer stepped up and hit a two-RBI triple into center field, giving the IronBirds the 3-2 lead. After Palmer was Steve Wilkerson, who hit another single, scoring Palmer from third to give the IronBirds the 4-2 lead.

The ValleyCats didn't waste any time responding to the IronBirds three-run inning, as they put up another run in the top of the fifth. After a Hyde groundout, Fisher got his third single of the night. Up next was Tanielu, who got his second RBI double of the night, scoring Fisher all the way from first. Nowottnick managed to get another ground out, but not before he allowed the bases to load up via another single and intentional walk. Manager Matt Merullo then made the call to the bullpen to have Derrick Bleeker come in to get the final out of the inning, which he did.

The IronBirds added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Jamill Moquete lead off with a single, and then stole second as Veloz struck out. Then with Lartiguez at the plate, Moquete took third after a passed ball. After Lartiguez grounded out, Riley Palmer stepped to the plate and delivered an RBI double, his second extra-base RBI of the night, and his third overall RBI. Wilkerson followed suit and got his second RBI single of the night, scoring Palmer from second to give the IronBirds a 6-3 lead.

For the first time all game, the IronBirds held the ValleyCats scoreless for two consecutive innings while scoring another run of their own. This time it was a two-out solo home run from Moquete, boosting the IronBirds lead to four.

The ValleyCats were able to put another two runs thanks to Tanielu's third RBI double of the night and his third RBI total, but it was too little too late. Ivan Hernandez shut the door for his third save of the season, as the IronBirds won, 7-5.

The IronBirds move to 14-28 while the ValleyCats fall to 30-13.
