-SPIKES START THREE-GAME ROAD TRIP TONIGHT: The State College Spikes continue to hold an eight-game lead over Williamsport in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division, and are just one game back of the NYPL's best record. Tonight, the Spikes begin a three-game series on the road against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field. The Spikes split a two-game mini-series against the Scrappers this past Tuesday and Wednesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Mahoning Valley is three games out of the NYPL Wild Card lead. State College is 39-43 all-time against the Scrappers, and 14-27 in games played at Eastwood Field.
-LAST GAME: Danny Diekroeger smashed his third home run of the year, but the State College Spikes were held to four hits and the Auburn Doubledays provided enough offense to earn a 7-1 win over the Spikes on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
A crowd of 5,013 fans, the third crowd of 5,000 or more at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this year, saw Diekroeger send a solo shot to the right field bleachers in the fourth inning. The long ball was the Stanford product's first of the year at home, and cut the Spikes' deficit to 2-1.
However, Auburn picked up a run on Brandon Miller's RBI single in the fifth inning to regain a two-run lead, and then added four runs in the eighth. The final Doubledays burst included three bases-loaded walks.
Fans were thrilled by the return of "Mountain Man" from the hit A&E reality TV show Duck Dynasty. "Mountain Man" threw out a ceremonial first pitch, served as guest public address announcer in the first inning, and signed autographs from the third inning until the end of the game.
Diekroeger put together the only multi-hit game for State College. Kenny Peoples-Walls delivered a double for the Spikes.
-PONCEDELEON GETS THE BALL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Daniel Poncedeleon makes his fifth start as a professional for State College and his seventh overall appearance tonight. Last time out, Poncedeleon went a career-long four innings against Tri-City and allowed a run on four hits and two walks. Despite taking the loss, the La Mirada, CA native struck out five batters for the third straight outing. escaped bases-loaded situations without allowing a run on four different occasions this season. The righty has made three starts on the road this season, making his debut with the Spikes in Jamestown on June 20 and going three innings in State College's victory against Batavia on July 3.
-HILL FACES SPIKES AGAIN FOR SCRAPPERS: Right-hander Cameron Hill makes his second straight start against State College this evening as he gets the ball for Mahoning Valley. Hill, the Indians' 17th-round draft choice in 2014 out of Redlands Community College in Oklahoma, allowed one run on five hits and three walks over four innings of work. Hill has not gone longer than four innings in one outing this year, and makes his eighth appearance of the season for the Scrappers tonight. The El Reno, OK native holds a 1.38 ERA at home, and makes his fifth outing at Eastwood Field this season.
-WICK PROMOTED TO PEORIA : The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Wednesday that Rowan Wick, the Spikes' single-season home run record holder, earned promotion to the Single-A Peoria Chiefs. Wick made an impact right away, drilling a three-run homer in the ninth that helped propel the Chiefs to a five-run frame that sent the game to extra innings. The slugger took just 19 games to break the previous Spikes single-season home run record of 10, set by David Washington just last year. The Cardinals' 2012 ninth-round draft choice currently leads the New York-Penn League with 14 homers, and also tops the league in runs batted in with 38.
