State College Spikes News Release
NILES, OH - Nick Thompson, Collin Radack and Chase Raffield all delivered home runs for the State College Spikes, and the homer barrage helped the Spikes to an 8-5 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Sunday night at Eastwood Field.
Radack collected three hits for the Spikes (30-13), who reached the 30-win mark on the earliest date in franchise history. The Hendrix College product went deep with a two-run shot to left-center field in the seventh inning for the second State College homer on the night.
Thompson started the Spikes' home run party with a two-run homer to left-center of his own in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie. The Cardinals' 2014 eighth-round draft choice now has 24 runs batted in on the season, the most for any player still with the Spikes.
Raffield then smashed his first professional home run to right-center field in the eighth inning, a two-run shot that increased the State College lead to 7-1. The Georgia State product now has six RBI over the last three games.
The Spikes withstood a late Mahoning Valley (18-25) rally that included a three-run double in the ninth by Taylor Murphy to earn the victory and increase their New York-Penn League Pinckney Division lead to nine games. State College is now tied with fellow division leaders Hudson Valley and Tri-City for the best record in the NYPL.
Brandon Lee (1-0), who joined the Spikes yesterday, picked up the win in relief in his first appearance for State College. Lee allowed a run on two hits over three innings of work, and notched one strikeout in the victory.
Starter Daniel Poncedeleon threw three scoreless innings for the Spikes, giving up three hits and a hit batsman while striking out four batters in the process.
Darren Seferina went 2-for-4 with two RBI to aid the State College offense. The Spikes also went 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts, the most team steals in a single game this year.
Scrappers reliever Dominic DeMasi (0-2) took the loss after allowing Thompson's homer in the sixth. DeMasi yielded a total of three runs, one of them earned, on two hits, a hit batsman and a walk while striking out one over two innings on the mound.
The game was halted for 30 minutes due to lightning in the bottom of the second inning, but continued without further delay.
Monday, the Spikes and Scrappers continue their three-game series at Eastwood Field with a 7:05 p.m. matchup. State College is set to have right-hander Trey Nielsen (3-1), who took his first loss of the season against the Scrappers this past Tuesday, on the mound to oppose Mahoning Valley left-hander Sean Brady (2-1).
After the road trip, the Spikes will return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for a big six-game homestand starting on Wednesday, July 30. The Aberdeen IronBirds (Baltimore Orioles) and Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay Rays) provide the opposition over the stretch.
Highlights include the return of $1 Beer Thursday, presented by 93.7 THE BUS, the second Bark in the Park Night of the year, presented by Metzger Animal Hospital and NEWSRADIO 103, on Saturday night, a pair of fantastic FIREWORKS shows, and Paint the Park Pink Night presented by Mount Nittany Health on Sunday.
