Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA- The woes continued for the Tri-City ValleyCats on Tuesday night in State College, as they were defeated by the Spikes by a final score of 6-2. The 'Cats fell to 26-17 on the season and have now lost five games in-a-row, and six of their last 10. With a Lowell victory against Auburn, the ValleyCats lead in the Stedler Division has now shrunk to just two games.
The ValleyCats struck first in the ballgame during the top of the 3rd inning, when Conrad Gregor launched a monster blast over the right field wall to give the 'Cats a 1-0 advantage. However, State College would come right back in the bottom of the frame to score four runs off of ValleyCats starting pitcher Randall Fant. That would be Fant's (1-2) last inning of work, as he would give up a total of seven hits and four earned runs.
The way things have been going for the 'Cats offensively, four runs would be an insurmountable feat. Although the ValleyCats had eight hits in the ballgame, they once again couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position, as they went just 1-for-7 on the night in that situation. During their five game losing streak, they have left a total of 39 men on base.
After Fant's departure, Pat Christensen would come on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, before handing the ball over to Zach Morton. After breezing through the sixth, Morton would run into trouble in the seventh. The Spikes used three singles in the inning to score another two runs, that put them ahead 6-1.
The 'Cats only other run came in the top of the eighth on an RBI ground out by catcher Brett Booth. In their last licks at the plate, the 'Cats were set down 1-2-3 in the ninth. Aside from the Conrad Gregor home run in the third inning, no 'Cat had an extra base hit in the ballgame.
The 'Cats will look to end their 5-game skid on Wednesday night in State College, as LHP Evan Grills (3-0, 2.61) starts for the ValleyCats and is opposed by RHP Juan Bautista (1-3, 3.45) for the Spikes. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
