Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
IronBirds Split Twin-billing with Staten Island
Aberdeen split their double-header with the Staten Island Yankees. The IronBirds took game 1, 5-1 with Augey Bill getting the win in relief of rehabbing Major Leaguer Steve Johnson. The Yankees salvaged the split in the night cap, topping the âBirds 7-3. Jorge Rivera took the loss in the contest, giving up 6 runs (5 earned) in just three innings of work. Trey Mancini had a strong game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. He added a double to take his team lead of 12 on the season in that category.
Yastrzemski Shows Off Power On The Road
Mike Yastrzemski played in four of the five games on the road trip and showed no signs of his bat cooling off. He went 6-for-14 on the trip, raising his batting average from .325 to .340. He hit his first professional home run in the first game of the trip at Dutchess Stadium against Hudson Valley and followed that with another blast yesterday in game 1 against Staten Island. Yastrzemski is currently riding a nine-game hit streak in which he has gone 12-for-35.
Home Sweet Home
The IronBirds open up a six-game home stand tonight which will see them play three games with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the Tri-City ValleyCats. This will be the only time the IronBirds face the Scrappers who currently sit fifth in the Pinckney division standings at 17-24. Aberdeen took two out of three from Tri-City earlier in July. This will be the ValleyCats lone trip to Ripken Stadium.
Off Day In Sight
The IronBirds will have their first true off day Monday following the conclusion of this home stand. Technically it will be the team's second off day of the season but the team used the off day on July 16th to travel nine hours to Vermont. Following Monday's off day the team will travel to face the Auburn Doubledays
On the mound tonight...
Aberdeen sends Steve Brault to the mound tonight to face the Scrappers. The lefty has been nothing short of solid with 1-0 record and a 1.14 ERA in 23.2 innings pitched. The IronBirds will face LHP Kenny Mathews who is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in just 12 innings pitched over five games started.
