Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

BROOKLYN, NY - The Renegades know one thing about facing the Cyclones: runs can be very hard to come by. On Sunday night, Hudson Valley was held to just seven hits in a 4-2 loss before dropping Monday's finale 4-0 with just six hits. With the win, the Cyclones hit the .500 mark for the first time in over a month and tightened the race in the McNamara Division. For a team that isn't usually known for offense, Brooklyn outmuscled the Renegades in the brief two-game series while getting another strong start from Carlos Valdez.

After smashing two home runs on Sunday to increase the team total to seven, the Cyclones got on the board in the second after Matt Oberste led off with a home run against Chris Kirsch. The lefty then walked Alex Sanchez before James Roche bounced into a 5-4-3 double play and Colton Playa struck out to end the inning, Meanwhile, the Renegades managed just one baserunner the first time through the batting order after Ty Young singled off Valdez with one out in the second.

Ariel Soriano opened the fourth inning with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. A Darryl George groundout to first moved Soriano to third base, but the heart of the order was futile against the southpaw Valdez. Johnny Field popped out to second base on the first pitch he saw before Oscar Hernandez closed the inning with a groundout to second.

In the home fourth, Brooklyn added to its lead after Kirsch walked Oberste with a full count and one out. A double by Sanchez put runners at second and third, and allowed Roche to roll a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-0. The middle of the order came through again in the fifth, but this time they did it with two outs. Singles by Jared King and Oberste ended Kirsch's (1-3) evening and brought in Anthony Tzamtzis, who got a weak groundball to shortstop off the bat of Sanchez. But Julian Morillo could not get the ball out cleanly for the final out, and all the runners were safe as King scored to make it 4-0.

Valdez (1-2) came out after the sixth inning in which he got Hernandez to fly out to center with runners at second and third and two outs. The Renegades then went in order in the seventh against righty Akeel Morris, who almost let them get back into it in the eighth inning. James Harris and Julian Morillo opened the frame with a pair of singles but Soriano hurt the chance with a 5-4-3 double play. A four pitch walk to George put runners at the corners for Field, but he popped out to the catcher on a payoff pitch to close out the inning. Morris remained in the game and retired the side in order in the ninth to give the Cyclones their season-high fifth win in a row.
