State College Spikes News Release

-SPIKES COME BACK HOME TO FACE VALLEYCATS AND START SIX-GAME HOMESTAND The State College Spikes face the Tri-City ValleyCats in the opener of a three-game series tonight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Tonight's contest also starts a six-game homestand for the Spikes, who will take on Vermont this weekend. State College is coming off of a split of a two-game series at Batavia, including last night's lengthy win. The Spikes are 11-3 in their last 14 home games. The Spikes currently sit one game out of the league's Wild Card lead, with Lowell leading the way. State College is 9-13 all-time against the ValleyCats, and 3-6 in home games in the all-time series. The Spikes swept Tri-City in a three-game set last year in Troy, NY.

-LAST NIGHT: The Spikes played their second-longest game in franchise history on Monday night, but it was well worth it as Luis Perez's bases-loaded sacrifice fly plated the go-ahead run and ended the Spikes' nine-game road skid with a 2-1 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs in a 13-inning affair at Dwyer Stadium. State College took 4 hours, 21 minutes to put away Batavia, nearly surpassing the 4 hours, 26 minutes the Spikes took to play a 14-inning, 7-6 loss against the Hudson Valley Renegades on July 26, 2006 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes had not gone to the 13th inning since that contest. Bruce Caldwell scored both runs for State College, while Jacob Booden earned the win and Jhonny Polanco the save in relief.

-REED, PIERCE GO TO HILL FOR SPIKES: After a change to the rotation, left-hander Jimmy Reed, who went a career-long six innings in game one of Wednesday's twin bill at Mahoning Valley, gets the start tonight against Tri-City. Reed, the sixth-round draft choice of the Cardinals out of Maryland in 2013, allowed one run in the start and did not get a decision. Right-hander Andrew Pierce will follow Reed in the second half of the "piggyback" setup. Pierce struck out seven batters in 4 1/3 innings against the Scrappers on Wednesday.

-TRI-CITY LOOKS FOR FANT-ASTIC MOUND PERFORMANCE: Left-hander Randall Fant gets the ball for the ValleyCats this evening. The southpaw was selected by the Astros in the 29th round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Arkansas. Fant makes his eighth appearance and fifth start tonight, and like Reed, has both relief wins and saves this year. The Texarkana, TX native went three perfect innings against Hudson Valley last time out, striking out three. Fant has gone a maximum of five innings in two different starts this year.

-STATE COLLEGE MOUND STAFF STILL STIFLING HITTERS: Despite allowing the most runs in a single game this season during Sunday's game, the Spikes bounced back with a strong effort from six pitchers on Monday to trail Brooklyn by less than one point for the New York-Penn League lead in team ERA. Both clubs are now a 2.58, with Tri-City in third at 2.62. Kevin Herget is now tied for the NYPL lead in wins with four.

-SPIKE MARKS: Steven Ramos dropped back to third in the NYPL batting race with a .350 average...Jimmy Bosco leads the NYPL in triples with six...Bosco has also reached base in 11 straight home games coming into tonight...David Washington leads the NYPL with 31 RBI...Bruce Caldwell now leads the NYPL in runs scored with 29...Jhonny Polanco notched 2 K's last night and is 4th among NYPL relievers with 11.64 K/9 IP
