Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - It just took a little bit of home cooking, as the Lowell Spinners overcame four errors with the help of a three-hit, three-RBI game from Kevin Mager to top the Auburn Doubledays in the first game of a six-game homestand at LeLacheur Park, 6-4, Tuesday night.
The win was the first time in nine games the Spinners have won or lost by more than a run at LeLacheur Park and continues the streak of alternating wins and losses dating back to July 11.
Auburn (13-29) jumped out to an early first inning lead scoring a two-out run. Bryan Lippincott singled through the hole at second, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on a double by Jimmy Yezzo to give the Doubledays a 1-0 lead.
Lowell (23-18) evened things up in the bottom half of the inning as Forrestt Allday led off the inning taking a pitch off the hip. A Tzu-Wei Lin double advanced Allday to third and Mager brought him in with a single to the hole at shortstop.
Both teams left the bases loaded in the second inning and the Spinners stranded two more in the third before taking the lead in the fourth inning. David Sopilka got things started with a one-out single to left. After a popout by Allday, Lin singled through the hole at second and Kevin Mager followd with a triple to the left-centerfield gap to give the Spinners a 3-1 lead.
The Spinners would expand their lead in the fifth inning, this time on a rally started by a one-out single from Cleuluis Rondon. After Rondon stole second, Jantzen Witte singled to left, moving Rondon to third while Witte advanced on an error by Brenton Allen in left field. The Doubledays intentionally walked Nick Moore to load the bases and Sopilka brought in a run on a sacrifice fly. After Moore stole second, Allday delivered a two-out single to score both Moore and Witte and extend the lead to 6-1.
The Doubledays made things interesting in the seventh, taking advantage of a sloppy Spinners defense. One night after making five errors, the Spinners threw the ball around a bit and three consecutive singles combined with throwing errors by Allday and Sopilka led to a three run inning, cutting the lead to 6-4.
Auburn put runners on the corners with one out in the ninth inning, but Joe Gunkel closed out the win, getting Allen swinging to end the game and preserve a 6-4 win.
Ty Buttrey started for the Spinners after having his turn skipped. Buttrey allowed five hits and three walks in four innings, but limited to the Doubledays to just one run, striking out three. Jonathan Aro (3-2, 2.43) picked up the win with four innings of relief, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned), striking out three. Gunkel earned his second save with another scoreless inning, having thrown 8.2 scoreless since joining the team.
Mager led the Spinners offense with three hits, driving in three. Allday reached base four times, driving in two, while Witte snapped an 0-for-20 streak with a two hit game.
The two teams meet again Wednesday night when reigning New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week Jamie Callahan (2-1, 4.55) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
