
Utley solid in rehab behind Thompson's strong debut

Jake Thompson (1-0) shined in his Fightin Phils (59-50) debut as he allowed just one run in seven innings as the Fightin Phils defeated the Trenton Thunder (58-51) 7-1 on Tuesday night. Chase Utley made a rehab appearance and Nick Williams had two hits in his Fightins debut.
Destin Hood hit a two-run home run off Caleb Smith in the top of the second inning that gave the Fightin Phils a 2-0 lead. Andrew Knapp led off the inning with a single and scored on the home run. Trenton scored a run off Thompson in the bottom of the second inning to cut Reading's lead to 2-1. Mark Payton scored after Danny Oh grounded into a double-play.
The Fightin Phils chased Smith out of the game in the top of the fifth inning with two outs. After Nick Williams and JP Crawford both made outs, Chase Utley kept the inning alive with a base hit. Brock Stassi followed with a single then he and Utley scored on a two-run double by Knapp. Reading took a 4-1 lead forcing Trenton to go to the bullpen. Cesar Vargas entered the game and got Cameron Perkins to groundout to shortstop.
Utley finished left the game after the top of the seventh inning. He went 1 for 4 with a single and two runs scored. Stassi and Perkins each hit RBI singles off Vargas in the top of the seventh inning to give Reading a 6-1 lead. Andrew Knapp hit a RBI double off reliever Conor Mullee in the top of the ninth inning to extend Reading's lead to 7-1. Knapp finished with three hits on the night.
Jimmy Cordero struck out two batters in one inning. Edubray Ramos walked one batter and recorded one strikeout to end the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Fightin Phils and Trenton Thunder meet again on Wednesday night. First pitch is at 7:00 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 6:30 pm.
