New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats saw their bats go silent on Tuesday night, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Richmond Flying Squirrels at the Diamond in Richmond.
The Fisher Cats (55-51) lost their second straight game, and mustered only six hits as a team, all singles. Richmond (56-52) gained critical ground in the race for the Eastern League playoffs, picking up their second consecutive win. New Hampshire is winless in four games against Richmond this season.
Both teams were quiet offensively through the first five frames, with New Hampshire starter Scott Barnes (L, 2-2) dazzling Richmond's hitters early on. The southpaw started the game with four perfect innings, making it nine frames in a row since he joined the starting rotation his last time out.
Richmond found the breakthrough in the top of the sixth inning. Leadoff man Eliezer Zambrano singled, and Engel Beltre followed suit with a single of his own to put runners on first and third. Rando Moreno laced a single through the right side, scoring Zambrano and moving Beltre to third. With new reliever Dustin Antolin on the mound, Austin Slater delivered his own RBI single to plate Beltre, and Mitch Delfino knocked a two-out single of his own to score Moreno, making it 3-0 in favor of Richmond. The Fisher Cats never seriously threatened after that, getting only one runner on base in the final three innings.
Barnes took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and whiffing two in five innings. Antolin gave up two hits and struck out one in his lone inning of action. Luis Perez delivered two shutout innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed.
New Hampshire will look to right the ship Wednesday night. Righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx gets the ball for New Hampshire against Richmond lefty Matt Gage. First pitch from The Diamond in Richmond is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with Ben Gellman's pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m. on the Fisher Cats Radio Network and online at www.nhfishercats.com.
