WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH (Apr. 3, 2003) - The Utah Grizzlies announced today that they have signed defenseman Cory Murphy to a contract. Murphy had played the entire season with the Fresno Falcons of the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL).

Murphy, 26, is currently the top goal scorer in the WCHL among defensemen with 17 goals and is second in the league in points (53) and assists (36). He has also compiled 131 penalty minutes in 70 games with the Falcons.

The Perth, Ontario native has played for Fresno the past three seasons and has been among the defensemen league leaders each year with his high offensive output. Last season, Murphy scored 53 points (10-43=53) with his 43 assists ranking him first among blueliners.

The 6-3, 210-pound defenseman was recently named to the All-WCHL First Team and last season was named to the All-WCHL Second Team.

Murphy attended Grizzlies training camp prior to the season and was one of the final players released. He was originally a seventh round (160th overall) draft selection of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1995 NHL Draft.

The Grizzlies will play their regular season home finale on Friday night when they host the Grand Rapids Griffins at 7:00 PM at the E-Center.
