Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release

LETHBRIDGE, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club is proud to announce that Ty Nash has revived the KidSport Challenge and will personally donate $10.00 for every goal he scores during the 2021-2022 season to KidSport Lethbridge and Taber.

The KidSport Challenge was initiated by former Hurricanes Captain, Tyler Wong, in the 2015-2016 season. Wong was joined by then teammates, Carter Folk and Ryley Lindgren and with the help from fans, they raised just over $6,500. The initiative was renewed for the 2016-2017 season when Wong and Lindgren were joined by Giorgio Estephan as Folk was traded prior to the start of the season. In its second year, and with the support of fans and corporate partners, the trio raised just over $13,000 for a grand total just shy of $20,000 over two seasons.

For Nash, the idea has been floating around in his mind for a couple of years. "The city of Lethbridge has given me so much being here for the last two years and I want to give back to the community. After hearing about the idea two years ago, it's always been something I've wanted to do. Knowing I can help give kids in our community the opportunity to play sports is something I am proud to be part of."

"I wanted to donate because sports have been a huge part of my life and has given me lots of great opportunities. I've met a lot of amazing people and made some great friendships that have helped me grow to be the person I am today. I want kids to be able to have that opportunity too," added Nash, who is entering his third season with the Hurricanes. "I am lucky and blessed that with the support from my parents and family I have been able to play hockey my whole life."

The Scottsdale, Arizona product hopes that Hurricanes fans and supporters will donate alongside him, "KidSport is an incredible organization and I want to encourage Hurricanes fans to donate with me. Help me help kids play sports."

The Hurricanes organization has also jumped on board with the initiative as the team will match dollar for dollar what the Nash will be donating.

"Seeing that our current players are continuing the tradition left by great Hurricanes of the past, it's a no-brainer for us to once again follow their lead and donate alongside them," said Hurricanes General Manager of Business Operations, Terry Huisman. "The fact that our players recognize the support we get from the community and want to give back is great to see and we are proud to once again donate to KidSport."

The Hurricanes open the 2021-2022 season tonight when they welcome the Calgary Hitmen at the ENMAX Centre in the Dairy Queen Home Opener. There will be a tailgate party beginning at 5:00pm serving up Browns Socialhouse burger, pop, and chips by donation. There will also be a beer garden and music from 106.7 ROCK. All food proceeds from the BBQ will go to United Way of Lethbridge and South Western Alberta. Doors open at 6:00pm and the puck drops at 7:00pm. Be prepared with your proof of COVID-19 vaccination and photo ID at the door.
