Pats Open 2021-22 Regular Season in Prince Albert

Regina, Sask. - The Regina Pats open their 2021-22 WHL season on the road against the Prince Albert Raiders on Friday night, playing the first of a home-and-home against the most recent WHL champs. The rematch is set for Saturday at 1:00 p.m inside the Brandt Centre, a game that will be televised nationally on CBC.

The Pats and Raiders meet on opening night for the second straight year and for the fourth time in six years, and are coming off a strong 3-2-1 pre-season, which saw the club lead in the WHL goals for with 28, while also leading in short-handed goals with seven.

In exhibition play, Pats goaltender Matthew Kieper went 3-0, posting a 2.00 GAA and a .945 SV% in four appearances. Both Connor Bedard and Cole Dubinsky were tied for first in pre-season scoring with 10 points each. Bedard also led in goals with six, while Cole Carrier exploded with five goals, including four short-handed tallies.

LAST SEASON:

The Regiment finished their 2020-21 Hub Centre season 9-12-2-1, which finished the Pats 5th in the division, while being outscored 76-96. Their power play ranked 11th (22.3%) while their penalty kill finished 11th (78.1%). Connor Bedard took home rookie of the year, while Ryker Evans produced 28 points from the backend, leading to being drafted in the second round by the Seattle Kraken.

There are 20 players returning from last years roster, with 12 forwards, six defencemen and two goalies returning. This offseason, the Pats added Zack Stringer, Luke Bateman and goaltender Keegan Maddocks via trade, plus added rookies Matteo Michels, Zane Rowan and Borya Valis to their roster, along with highly anticipated CHL import pick Stanislav Svozil.

VS. PRINCE ALBERT:

Last season, the Regina Pats went 2-2 against the Prince Albert Raiders (17 GA - 14 GF) losing 6-3 to open the season on March 12th before grabbing a 5-3 win on March 25th and a 4-3 victory on April 18th after a 4-2 loss on April 13th. Faceoff eight times this season (four in the first half and four in the second).

The Pats are 156-127-11-11-6 vs. the Raiders all time and are 13-10-0 against the Raiders over the last five years. The Regiment have also dropped the last three openers against the Raiders since 2016-17. The Pats are also 1-3-1 in season openers since 2016-17 and are 2-2-1 over their last five home openers since that time.

The Prince Albert Raiders went 1-3 in pre-season play and will play 11 games in the month of October, with six of them on the road. They are coming off a 9-11-3-1 season, finishing fourth in the Hub Centre Division. Evan Herman led the team with three goals in four pre-season games, after finishing second on the club in goals in the hub season with eight.

Prince Albert is the last club to win a WHL championship (2018-19), after the abbreviated 2021 Hub season and the cancellation of the 2020 playoffs. The Raiders have three players drafted in the first round by an NHL club: Nolan Allan (CHI), Kaiden Guhle (MTL) and Ozzy Wiesblatt (SJS). Guhle and Wiesblatt are still with their respective NHL clubs. The Raiders are led behind the bench by Marc Habscheid, who enters his eighth season as their head coach, while former Pats coach Curtis Hunt returns for his seventh season as GM.

COMING UP:

The Regina Pats conclude their home-and-home with the Prince Albert Raiders tomorrow afternoon inside the Brandt Centre. The Pats will play three games in five days next week, starting with a matchup against the Winnipeg ICE on Wednesday, October 6, followed by a road contest in Moose Jaw on Friday, and ending with a home date with Brandon on Sunday, October 10.

Tickets are still available for the Pats home opener on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. There will be a pre-game tailgate at Confederation Park starting at 11 a.m. for anyone with a ticket to the game.
