TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- The Traverse City Beach Bums scored four times with two outs in the seventh inning of Saturday night's contest to pull away from the Lake Erie Crushers in a 6-2 victory at Wuerfel Park.
The loss for the Crushers (27-35) marked just the ninth time that they've lost this season despite scoring first, while the win for the Beach Bums (37-26) was their fourth in their last six games.
Lake Erie held the lead twice, but the Beach Bums battled from behind, and scored four runs with two out in the seventh inning, using a deflating, three-run homer from Jay Austin to put the game away.
Anderson Hidalgo drove in both runs for the Crushers. Chandler Brock singled with one out in the first, stole second base, and scored on Hidalgo's two-out double to right center to give Lake Erie the early lead.
Traverse City used the long ball to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Brandon Jacobs, who leads the Beach Bums in homers, hit his 12th homer of the season, a solo shot to left, knotting the game at 1-1.
The Crushers used three straight one out singles from Austin Prott, Brock and Jose Barraza to load the bases for Hidalgo in the top of the third. Hidalgo's fly ball to right was deep enough to score Prott, giving the Crushers a 2-1 lead.
An inning and a half later, the Beach Bums tied the game again. Jose Vargas hit a slow roller down the third base line, which prompted an errant throw from Hidalgo. Vargas reached on the infield single and advanced to second on the errant throw, before scoring the game tying run on Reggie Lawson's RBI single to center.
The Beach Bums went to work with two outs in the seventh inning to pull away. With runners on second and third, and two outs, Jeff DeBlieux reached on an infield single to second to score Brandon Jacobs to give Traverse City a 3-2 lead, setting up Austin, who followed with a three-run homer to right to put the game away.
Ian MacDougall (8-4) came away with the win, after allowing a pair of runs on eight hits over eight innings, marking his second straight win against the Crushers. Hunter Adkins (3-5) took the loss, after surrendering six runs on seven hits while fanning seven over seven innings of work.
The top four batters in the order did most of the damage offensively, counting for seven of Lake Erie's eight hits on the night. Prott extended his on base streak to 30 games with a 2-for-4 performance. Brock had a pair of base hits and went 2-for-4 as well, while Hidalgo went 2-for-2, and drove in both of Lake Erie's runs.
The Crushers will finish their three game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at Wuerfel Park on Sunday night. Right-hander Zach Morton (3-2, 3.76) will start for the Crushers. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
