SAUGET, Ill. -- The Gateway Grizzlies were unable to rebound from a slow start on Friday night in an 8-4 loss to the Schaumburg Boomers at GCS Ballpark.

The Grizzlies (23-40) trailed 6-0 after three innings and never fully recovered. The Boomers (27-37) received a strong start from RHP Eddie Cody (7-2) in the victory. Cody allowed four runs on seven hits in his six innings of work.

Gateway starter Dillon Haviland (0-2) struggled out of the gate in his second professional start. The rookie allowed a first inning solo home run to Jordan Dean and was also tagged for a two-run homer by Mike Schulze in the second inning.

The Boomers used three hits and a walk to go ahead 5-0 after two innings. Willi Martin started the inning with a double and TJ Bennett reached on a walk. That put two aboard for Ty Nelson and he delivered a single that plated both Martin and Bennett. The hit extended Schaumburg's lead to 3-0. Schulze then belted a 3-1 pitch over the fence to deliver the final blow in the inning.

Schaumburg tallied another run in the third when Martin singled in a run. The Boomers led 6-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning. The Grizzlies chipped away in the middle innings, adding a run in the third and three more in the sixth.

Back-to-back singles by Cody Livesay and Craig Massoni started the third inning to put two aboard for Ben Waldrip. Waldrip continued the hit parade with a single to plate Livesay.

RHP Ross Spurgeon entered into the game in the fifth inning and kept Gateway in it with three scoreless innings of work. Spurgeon scattered three hits against his former team, allowing the offense to chip away once again in the sixth inning.

Waldrip singled with one out and Blake Brown advanced to first base on a walk. That brought up Tyler Tewell, who delivered a three-run homer to jolt the Grizzlies right back in the game. Gateway trailed just 6-4 heading into the seventh inning.

Gateway would be held scoreless in the following three innings, while Schaumburg added two insurance runs in the eighth inning.

Livesay, Massoni and Waldrip all recorded multi-hit games for Gateway. Livesay led the charge with three hits. RHP Pete Perez pitched one scoreless inning in his Grizzlies debut.

The Grizzlies and Boomers continue their weekend series Saturday night. RHP Trevor Richards (3-4, 3.25) will take the mound for Gateway and LHP Peter Gehle (2-3, 5.60) will pitch for the Boomers. First pitch is set for 7:05. Sam Levitt and Kevin Schaefer will call the action on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN's digital platforms and 1400 AM KJFF.
