Rascals Lose Opener at Windy City

River City Rascals News Release


Crestwood, IL - The Rascals (34-30) fell 7-3 to the Windy City ThunderBolts (26-27) on Friday, July 31 at Standard Bank Stadium.

RHP Clay Smith (L, 0-2) made his third start of the season and took a no-decision. He surrendered four runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks. He matched a season-high with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

Windy City starter Austin Wright (W, 4-8) earned the win after allowing three runs in 5.0 innings. He walked five while fanning five hitters.

The ThunderBolts took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Torres walked, and Austin Gallagher doubled with one out. Max White followed with an RBI sac fly, which scored Torres from third.

RF Jackson Slaid tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo homerun, his sixth of the season.

Windy City responded with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the frame. A single, walk, and error loaded the bases with no outs. Coco Johnson brought home a run with a sacrifice flyout, and Gallagher hit an RBI bloop single to left field. White collected another RBI with a groundout, and two more runs scored on a throwing error by LHP Stephen Frey. Ransom LaLonde added an RBI double with two outs.

The Rascals scored their final two runs in the sixth inning. LF Brian Hansen and 3B Taylor Ard each walked to begin the inning. DH Danny Canela then hit an RBI single, and Ard scored on a single by Slaid.

Frey was charged with three unearned runs in 0.1 inning, and RHP Will Schierholz tossed a scoreless 1.1 inning of relief. RHP Derek Cape, RHP Victor Beriguete, and RHP Zeb Sneed each tossed 1.0 scoreless inning.

The Rascals and Windy City ThunderBolts continue their three-game series on Saturday, August 1 at Standard Bank Stadium at 6:05 p.m. CDT.
