Washington Wild Things News Release

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things defeated the Florence Freedom in the second game of a three game weekend series on Saturday night. Washington secured the 3-2 walk-off victory. Relief pitcher Jonathon Kountis earned the win to improve, while Seth Harvey suffered the loss for the Freedom.

It was the Freedom who jumped out to the early lead, on a night where pitching and defense by both teams kept the game close. Florence first baseman Sam Eberle hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for the first run of the ballgame.

Washington all-star shortstop Austin Wobrock flashed the leather on a few occasions during the game, including two in the top of the sixth inning. Wobrock took that defensive momentum into his at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning when he hit an RBI single that scored right fielder David Popkins and tied the game.

The Wild Things starter Matt Fraudin threw an impressive five innings in his first professional start. The Washington bullpen picked up where he left off with a great effort.. The game went into extra innings after the Wild Things threatened to score in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Both teams battled late into the night, but it was the bat of Wild Things catcher Maxx Garrett that would come through in the clutch. With two outs in the bottom of the twelfth inning, Garrett crushed a ball over the fence that would give the Wild Things the victory.

Washington hopes to sweep the series against the Freedom on Sunday, August 2. First pitch from CONSOL Energy Park is scheduled for 2:35 PM. For tickets, please visit the Wild Things front office, call 724-250-9555 or visit www.washingtonwildthings.com.
