Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, Ill. (August 1, 2015) - The Southern Illinois Miners fell 9-4 to the Evansville Otters on Saturday night at Rent One Park to even up their weekend series at one game apiece, with the Otters striking for seven runs in the second inning to take control of the contest early.
After a 1-2-3 first inning for Miners starter Jarett Miller (3-3), the right-hander was chased with seven runs being scored in the second inning. Brandon Cowan struck out Jeremy Nowak after the Otters sent 11 men to the plate in the frame, with RBIs in the inning by Cory Urquhart, Dean Wilson, Dane Phillips and Chris Sweeney.
Cowan held the fort over the next five and one-third innings, striking out seven in his outing, but the Miners offense could not muster up enough hits against Otters starter Will Oliver. Steve Marino homered in the bottom of the second, his third home run in as many nights for the Miners' first run, and Michael Earley shot a double to deep left-center field in the fifth, but both times the Otters responded with runs of their own.
The Miners were able to tack on two more runs for the final margin late in the game, with Frank Martinez looping a single with two outs in the seventh to plate a run and Jerrud Sabourin hitting a single to right-center with two outs after reliever Shane Weedman walked two in the frame, but it was not enough as the Miners dropped to two games back of the Otters in the standings.
Southern Illinois now faces a big rubber match against the Otters on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. Rick Teasley will take the hill for the Miners against Evansville's Preston Olson.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions.
