Manchester Monarchs News Release
LOS ANGELES, CA - Los Angeles Kings captain and former Manchester Monarchs forward Dustin Brown as well as Kings and former Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Quick have been selected for the roster for the U.S. men's ice hockey tournament at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, it was announced today. Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi is a member of the management team that helped select the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team.
"This could be a once-in-a-lifetime shot and any time you get the chance to play in the Olympics and to represent your country it is a huge honor," said Brown, who is from Ithaca, New York, and participated in Team USA's Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Orientation Camp which took place August 17 - 19, 2009. "I got the call this morning and needless to say it is a dream come true and an experience I am really looking forward to."
Brown, 25, has never participated in the Olympics before. Internationally he most recently represented Team USA at the 2009 World Championships (9 GP, 3-58, with his eight points second on the team and his three goals tied for third on the club while being named one of Team USA's Three Best Players as determined by tournament coaches and serving as one of Team USA's captains as team captains rotated throughout the tournament).
He has also played for the United States at the 2008 World Championships (7 GP, 5-49, finishing tied for second on the club in goals, third in points and tied for third in assists); the 2006 World Championships (7 GP, 5-27, where he led the club in goals and points) and the 2004 World Championships (Bronze medal -- 9 GP, 1-34). He has also represented the U.S. at the 2003 World Junior Championships (7 GP, 2-24, as he was the youngest member of the team) and at the 2002 World Junior Championships (7 GP, 1-34).
A 6-foot, 208-pound right wing, Brown this season has 28 points (9-1928) and 14 penalty minutes in 41 games. His 19 assists lead the team and his 28 points rank second. His 143 hits leads the Kings and rank third in the NHL.
Last season, Brown was an All-Star for the first time, a finalist for the NHL Foundation Player Award in recognition of his services in the community, and he was selected as the Kings MVP (Bill Libby Memorial Award), Most Popular Player and recipient of the Kings Community Service Award as he recorded 53 points (24-2953) and 64 penalty minutes in 80 games. He also ranked third in the NHL (and led the Kings) with 285 hits and he donates $50 for every hit to KaBOOM!, a non-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America ($14,250 total donated last season).
Brown was named the 15th captain in Kings history on October 8, 2008. He is the youngest player to wear the "C" in Kings history and he is also the only American-born captain in team history.
Selected by the Kings in the first-round (13th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Brown has played his entire six-year NHL career with the Kings. In 390 career regular season games, Brown has 220 points (98-122220) and 283 penalty minutes. In 79 games with the Monarchs during the 2004-05 season, Brown recorded 74 points (29-4574) and 96 penalty minutes to rank second on Manchester's roster. He was also a member of PlanetUSA at the 2005 Dodge AHL All-Star Classic held in Manchester, NH.
Quick, 23, who is one of three goaltenders selected for the club, has never participated in the Olympics before. He has also never played for Team USA in international competition before. In August of 2005, he was invited to attend the U.S. Men's Junior Evaluation Camp, also known as the Summer Challenge.
"It is real exciting as it is something you dream about growing up," said Quick, who is from Milford, Connecticut, and participated in Team USA's Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Orientation Camp which took place August 17 - 19, 2009. "It is such a unique opportunity as you play with the best from your country against the best in the world. I am looking forward to it but I still have a job to do over the next six months so I will be taking things one day at a time."
A 6-foot-1, 223-pounder, Quick this season is in the midst of his first full NHL campaign. In 37 games, he is 21-13-3 with a 2.62 goals-against-average and a.904 save percentage. Among all NHL goalies, Quick is tied for fifth in wins; tied for first in games played; ninth in saves (910) and tied first in shoot-out wins (five).
Last season, Quick ranked third among NHL rookie goaltenders with 21 wins, a 2.48 goals-against-average,.914 save percentage and four shutouts in 44 games with the Kings. His 21 wins were the third most ever by a Kings rookie goaltender and his four shutouts tied a Kings rookie season-season record. He was also 4-1 in shootouts (10-for-14, 71 percent).
Quick last year started 22 of the final 27 Kings games and 41 of the final 50 after being recalled from Manchester (American Hockey League) on December 16, 2008.
