PROVIDENCE, RI -- Trent Whitfield scored the game-winning goal and Jordan Knackstedt had a goal and two assists as the Providence Bruins scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-2, Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

Providence outshot Bridgeport 29-19 for the game. Sound Tigers goaltender Rick DiPietro looked strong in his third rehab start for Bridgeport. DiPietro played the entire game in net, making 25 saves. Danny Sabourin stopped 17 shots to earn the victory for the Bruins.

Rob Kweit put the Bruins on the board early on, scoring his first goal of the year 2:51 into the game. As Providence cycled the puck in the offensive zone, Jamie Arniel brought the puck around the net and found Kweit at the point. Kweit took the pass and one-timed a blast just over DiPietro's left pad.

After falling behind, the Sound Tigers rallied for two goals midway through the first period. Bridgeport tied the game at the 4:38 mark when Jesse Joensuu slammed home a rebound after Sabourin stopped Brett Westgarth's initial blue-line blast. It was Joensuu's sixth goal of the year.

Sean Bentivoglio scored a rebound goal of his own at the 9:56 mark to give the Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead. Mark Flood sent the puck towards the net and, after Sabourin sticked it aside, Bentivoglio was standing at the post to put the rebound into the top of the net for his team leading 12th goal of the season.

A scoreless second period saw Sabourin make the best save of the frame, making a glove stop on a breakaway by James Sixsmith midway through the stanza.

The Bruins dominated the third period, out-shooting the Sound Tigers 11-2. Drew Larman tied the game with 9:13 remaining. Craig Weller sent a shot towards the net which DiPietro blocked away. However, Larman was able to pick up the rebound and poke it past DiPietro for his third goal of the year.

With 3:52 left in regulation Flood coughed up the puck behind his own net. Whitfield pounced on the loose puck and stuffed a wrap-around shot through DiPietro's legs for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Knackstedt tallied an empty-net goal as time expired to seal the victory for Providence.

The Sound Tigers continue their weekend road trip Saturday night as they visit the Hartford Wolf Pack. Face-off at the XL Center is set for 7:00 pm. Bridgeport's next home game is set for Saturday, January 9th against the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 pm. For tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000 or log onto www.soundtigers.com.
