Turnbull's Stellar Start Propels Dogs to First Win in Franchise History

Sioux Falls, S.D. - Kylin Turnbull tossed six scoreless innings and the Chicago Dogs survived a furious ninth inning rally from the Canaries to capture their first win in franchise history Saturday night in Sioux Falls by a score of 4-2.
For the second straight night the Dogs jumped out to an immediate lead, scoring one run on a Kyle Gaedele infield single in the top of the first. Unlike game one for the Dogs on Friday, they were able to maintain their lead throughout Saturday's ball game adding single runs of insurance in the second, eighth, and ninth innings respectively.
Turnbull pitched to contact throughout his six innings of work, striking out only three Canaries but allowing just two hits. The lanky lefty gave way to Michael Wagner for innings seven and eight, who surrendered one run on one hit, a solo home run by Chris Grayson, in his Dogs debut.
Kaohi Downing pitched an adventurous ninth inning for Chicago to preserve the victory and earn the first save in franchise. After allowing a lead-off double to Blake Schmit, Downing allowed an RBI single to Chris Jacobs, and another single to Ty Morrison. An error by left fielder Jonathan Moroney allowed Jacobs and Morrison to each advance an extra base, putting the tying runs in scoring position for Sioux Falls with just one out. However, Downing escaped the jam by inducing ground outs from Patrick Fiala and Aaron Gretz to seal the win.
Hinsdale, Ill. native, Joe Benson hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning for the Dogs, his first in a Chicago uniform. The Dogs also received RBI contributions from Moroney and Wilfredo Rodriguez.
Joe Bircher made the start and pitched well in a losing effort for the Canaries, posting seven innings of five hit, two run baseball, while striking our four and walking none.
Turnbull earned the win for the Dogs, the first in team history.
The two teams will meet again Sunday in what will be the rubber match of the 2018 opening series. Buffalo Grove, Ill. native Scott Firth makes the start for Chicago against Sioux Falls right-hander Dylan Thompson.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts with a pregame show beginning at 12:45 p.m.
