Troubles with the West Continue, Growlers Lose to Woodchucks

Kalamazoo, MIch., - The Kalamazoo Growlers fell to the Wisconsin Woodchucks 9-1 on Strike Out Cancer Night at Homer Stryker Field.

The ballpark was filled with 4,588 fans on a night to celebrate and honor cancer survivors in the Kalamazoo area. With approximately half of the stadium with cancer survivors, the team wore special jerseys with selfies of over 150 pictures submitted by cancer survivors on the jerseys. The jerseys were auctioned off to those in attendance with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the West Michigan Cancer Center.

The Growlers led 1-0 after the second inning on an RBI double by Jimmy Sullivan (UVA) to score Shea Kramer (Utah).

The Kalamazoo bats only earned three more hits for the entire ballgame as the Woodchucks scores five in the fourth, two in the sixth and seventh, to cap the final score at 9-1.

JT Rogoszewski (CMU) and Alvin Vega (Georgetown College) pitched the final two innings for the Growlers, combining for just one hit in seven batters faced.

Brennan Cox (0-1, Wayne State) registered the loss after throwing 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on four hits. The starter for Wisconsin, Robert Wegielnik (3-2, Florida Southwest), went five innings, allowing one run on three hits.

The Kalamazoo Growlers return to action tomorrow against the Wisconsin Woodchucks at 3:05 p.m. It will be the final game before the All-Star break.
