ADDITION OF SOUTHAVEN'S SELBY AMONG FLURRY OF RECENT ROSTER ACTIVITY
Redbirds lose Rodriguez to Japan and Abbott to injury; Weibl makes a return to Memphis
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired infielder Bill Selby from the Cleveland organization for Class-A Peoria catcher Clint Chauncey. Selby, who lives in Southaven, Miss. (a suburb of Memphis), was assigned to Memphis and played in last night's 13-2 win in Salt Lake City.
A 13th-round draft pick of the Boston Red Sox in 1992 out of Southern Miss, Selby spent two different stints in the Indians system, the last of which came after being signed as a free agent on 12/10/01. His most productive season as a professional came in 2000 with Buffalo of the Triple-A International League where he batted .299 with 21 home runs and 86 RBI in 100 games.
Including the addition of Selby, the Redbirds have seen a flurry of changes to their roster over the past week, most notably the departure of arguably the best pitcher in the Pacific Coast League, starter Nerio Rodriguez. After beginning the season 5-1 with a 1.89 ERA in 11 starts, the Dominican-born Rodriguez opted out of his contract with the Cardinals to continue his career in Japan with the Kintetsu Buffaloes of Osaka. The right-hander had only allowed 19 runs (16 earned) and 57 hits over his 76.1 innings.
Former Memphis pitcher Clint Weibl was signed as a free agent to fill the spot in the rotation. A free agent after last season with Memphis, Weibl was 5-1 with a 4.44 ERA in five starts in 2003 for Long Island of the independent Atlantic League. In his return, Weibl became the only player to see action for the Redbirds in all six seasons of the franchise's history.
Another recent loss to the lineup was Kurt Abbott. The 34-year-old infielder suffered a severe injury to his right Achilles' tendon running out a grounder in the Redbirds' 3-2 loss to Omaha at AutoZone Park on May 28. The nine-year major league veteran underwent surgery the next day and will be out for the rest of 2003 and has indicated that the injury could be career-ending as well.
Also, the Memphis outfield lost two of its stars to the Cardinals this past week as So Taguchi and Kerry Robinson were called up to St. Louis. In limited action with the Redbirds, Taguchi hit .254 with 10 RBI over 39 games. Robinson terrorized PCL pitchers with a .356 average including 21 hits, 14 runs and five stolen bases in only 14 games with the club. In return, the 'Birds received some help for their struggling bullpen as relievers Gabe Molina and Mike Crudale were optioned back to Memphis. Crudale posted an 0-1 mark and 1.00 ERA in 10 appearances with St. Louis from 5/2-5/29, while Molina struggled to a 13.48 ERA in only 2.2 innings.
