Edmonton Trappers News Release

Shortstop Anthony Medrano singled with one out in the top of the eighth inning, scoring Matt Cepicky with the winning run as the Edmonton Trappers went on to defeat the Omaha Royals 5-4 Thursday night at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha. It was the first game for Medrano, who spent parts of three seasons in an Omaha uniform, at Rosenblatt Stadium since the end of the 2000 season, which saw him bat .266 with eight home runs and 55 RBI in 128 games. He was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI extending his streak of reaching base via a hit or a walk to 25 games. The Trappers evened their record on one-run games to 7-7 with the victory and are now 11-18 on the road. Rosenblatt Stadium has historically been a rough place for the Trappers to play. The club lost the first 10 games they even played at the stadium before breaking that losing streak in 2001. Including that victory the Trappers have now won five of the last six games played between the two clubs in Omaha. Edmonton and Omaha will continue this four-game set on Friday night.

Left fielder Terrmel Sledge didn't waste any time extending his hitting streak to 18 games on Thursday night. Sledge smashed a solo home run off Omaha starter Wes Obermueller with two down in the first inning to put the Trappers in front. It was his club-leading ninth home run of the season. The hitting streak is the longest current streak in the Pacific Coast League. Edmonton plated another run in the second inning as Edwards Guzman, who now has hit safely in 11 consecutive games, led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Luis Figueroa. The Royals got on the board in the bottom of the second as designated hitter Benny Agbayani hit his sixth home run of the season off Trapper starter Eric Knott. Edmonton tallied a run for the third consecutive inning when Medrano led off with a single and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Cepicky.

The Trappers took at three-run lead in the fifth inning as Sledge drew an inning-opening walk and scored on a two-out single by Valentino Pascucci. Knott cruised through the first five innings, allowing only the one run, but things fell apart for the lefty in the sixth. Mike Kelly led off with single and Jarrod Patterson followed with a base hit of his own to put runners on first and second. Agbayani then singled up the middle to load the bases for Jed Hansen, who singled to left center, scoring Patterson and Kelly to draw the Royals to within one run of the lead. Alexis Gomez then reached on a bunt single to load the bases and Knott was replaced by Jose Colon (1-0), who got Juan Brito to ground into a double play. Agbayani scored the tying run on the play. The game remained tied until the eighth inning, when Cepicky led off with a single, moved to second on a base hit by Randy Knorr and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Figueroa. Peter Bergeron then drew a walk, setting the stage for Medrano's game-winning single. Colon and Bryan Hebson did an outstanding job in relief of Knott. The two relievers combined to toss four shutout innings and Hebson pitched the final two frames for his first save of the season.
