Sidewinders Drop Seventh Straight

Dennis Tankersley allowed just five hits through eighth innings Thursday night as the Portland Beavers blanked Tucson 5-0 in the opener of a four-game series. The loss was Tucson's seventh straight and dropped the team ten games below .500.

Tankersley retired the first 11 Sidewinders he faced and surrendered just five hits through eight innings of work. Jay Witasik threw a scoreless ninth to complete the shutout. The game marked the second time this season Tucson was shutout.

Mike Gosling suffered the loss to fall to 3-7. Gosling has made four starts this season against the Beavers, losing all four. The left-hander allowed ten hits and five runs in 6.1 innings of work while walking three and failing to strike out a batter.

The Beavers plated a run in the second when Alex Fernandez grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. Portland increased the lead to 3-0, scoring two runs in the third on a Sidewinder error and a bases loaded walk to Wiki Gonzalez.

The Beavers added single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.

Tucson did not have a batter with a multi-hit game and advanced only one man to second base all game long.

The Sidewinders dropped to 24-34 with the loss. Game two of the series will be played Friday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. THE GAME WILL BE TAPE DELAYED UNTIL 6:00 P.M. ON AM 990 KTKT. Brady Raggio (0-1 3.86) will make his second start for Tucson. The Beavers will counter with LHP Oliver Perez (2-3 1.89)
