Trenton storms back for 6-5 win over Portland

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton rallied from a 4-0 deficit, and topped Portland 6-5 on Saturday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has taken two of the first three games of the series, and both wins have been come-from-behind efforts. The Thunder trailed Portland 6-0 at one point on Thursday night in the first game of the series. Trenton also had its largest crowd of the season at Waterfront Park (7,837).

Trenton broke a 5-5 tie for the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Center fielder Austin Krum singled. He moved to second on a walk by Second baseman Reegie Corona. Shortstop Eduardo Nunez then reached on an error by Portland Shortstop Argenis Diaz to load the bases. Outfielder Noah Hall followed with a sacrifice fly RBI to give the Thunder a 6-5 lead. Trenton Reliever Jose Valdez worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his seventh save, and second save of the series. Trenton Reliever Grant Duff (2-0) worked two innings and allowed one unearned run to notch his second win for the Thunder in four appearances. Portland Reliever Dustin Richardson (2-2) took the loss by allowing two hits and three runs (one earned) in 1 1/3 innings. Down 5-4, Portland tied the game in the top half of the eighth inning on a passed by Catcher Jesus Montero.

Trenton (46-46) scored five runs in the seventh inning to take a 5-4 lead. With one out, Krum walked, and Corona followed with a walk to put runners at first and second base. After a pop-out by Nunez, Hall walked to load the bases. All the walks were against Portland Reliever Chad Rhoades. Richardson relieved Rhoades and promptly allowed a game-tying grand slam to Montero. The home run was Montero's sixth of the season. Trenton took a 5-4 lead later in the frame on an error by Diaz. Trenton only had one hit in the five-run inning.

Portland scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. With one out, Center fielder Josh Reddick walked. He advanced to second base on a throwing error by Trenton Starting Pitcher Kanekoa Texeira. The error allowed Shortstop Argenis Diaz to reach first base safely. Left fielder Ryan Kalish followed with an RBI single to score Reddick with the first run of the game. Third baseman Jorge Jimenez extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI double to score Diaz. With two outs in the inning, Designated Hitter Jon Still connected on a two-run double to make it 4-0. Still has five RBI in the last two games for Portland.

Plummer tossed five shutout innings and scattered four hits. He struck out one and walked three. Texeira went four innings and allowed four hits and four runs (one earned). He tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and walked three. The four runs were the most that Texeira has allowed since April 26th. Trenton Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez and Krum each had two hits in the win.

The Thunder and Portland wrap up their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. LHP Wilkin De La Rosa (3-5, 4.20) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Ryne Lawson (1-8, 7.30).
