Curve Game Notes for July 18

July 18, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

CURVE/HARRISBURG SERIES: The Altoona Curve and the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Washington Nationals) continue a four game series tonight at Blair County Ballpark. Currently the Curve are 4-1 against the Senators this season.

LAST TIME OUT: The Senators scored nine runs on 15 hits en route to a 9-3 win over the Altoona Curve. OF Jose Tabata extended his 11-game hitting streak in the loss...The Curve stranded a season-high 14 runners on base.

FOR ALTOONA: RHP Derek Hankins will get the start for the Altoona Curve tonight. Hankins, 26, was recently placed back on the Curve roster after being sent to Lynchburg on 7/13. This will be Hankins' first start of the season against Harrisburg. Last year, the Pirates' 2004 10th round pick out of the University of Memphis faced the Senators four times and went 0-1 with a 4.24 ERA.

FOR HARRISBURG: Righty Erik Arnesen will toe the rubber for the Senators in his 13th start of the year (14th appearance). Arnesen, who was Washington's 17th round draft choice out of Grove City (NJ) College is in his first Double-A season. On 5/12, Arnesen, 25, made his Double-A debut against Altoona, tossing 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Arnesen was promoted from Potomac (A) after going 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA in six starts with the P-Nats.

A BAKER'S DOZEN...OR TWO DOZEN? What's in a number for Pirates' No. 1 prospect Pedro Alvarez? When first called up to Double-A, Alvarez donned uniform No. 13. While wearing the "unlucky" number, Pedro was just 5-for-32 (.156). Since changing his uniform number to No. 24 (the number he wore while he played collegiately at Vanderbilt University), Alvarez is 13-for-34 (.382).

JOSE TABULATES: Pirates No. 3 prospect Jose Tabata is having a fantastic July. Tabata is hitting .317 (19x60) this month and is in now on a career-high 11-game hitting streak. Tabata had two nine-game hitting streaks when with the Yankees organization. Tabata has tied Steve Lerud for the longest hitting streak by a Curve player this season. Lerud enjoyed an 11-game streak from 4/25 through 5/15.

HOME SWEET HOME: CF Gorkys Hernandez has grown quite fond of the surroundings at BCB. Gorkys is now hitting .333 (27x81) in home games this season.
