New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Marty McLeary notched season highs by recording seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings, and David Cooper delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to help the New Hampshire Fisher Cats knock off the Connecticut Defenders, 5-2, before a standing-room-only crowd of 7,163 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Saturday night.
McLeary (2-2) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk to post his second win. Edgar Estanga (1.1 IP), Danny Farquhar (1.0 IP) and Zach Dials (1.0) provided scoreless relief. Dials, making his first appearance for New Hampshire (43-50) since April 28, earned his first save of the season and 16th career Fisher Cats' save, moving him into a tie with Jordan DeJong for third on the club's all-time list.
The Fisher Cats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Todd Donovan (1-for-3, BB, 2 R, RBI) singled and Darin Mastroianni (0-for-4, BB, R) walked. Defenders catcher Tyler LaTorre committed a throwing error on a pick-off attempt, allowing Donovan to score from second and advancing Mastroianni to third. Brad Emaus (1-for-4, RBI, BB) then grounded an RBI single to left.
Connecticut (54-39) rallied back with single runs in the third and fourth innings, tying the game 2-2.
But the Fisher Cats answered right back in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice grounder by Donovan, plating Adam Calderone (3-for-4, 2B, R), who led off with a single off English, for a 3-2 Fishers' lead.
English (6-6) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs on six hits in four innings, with three strikeouts and three walks.
New Hampshire tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Geivy Garcia. Jonathan Diaz (1-for-2, BB, HBP, R) was hit by a pitch, Donovan walked and Emaus walked to load the bases. Cooper (1-for-4, 2 RBI) then grounded an 0-2 pitch through the middle, scoring Diaz and Donovan for a 5-2 lead.
On Sunday afternoon, New Hampshire sends right-hander Randy Boone (6-5, 4.07) to the mound against Connecticut right-hander Daryl Maday (4-3, 4.01) in a 1:05pm game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Sunday is Faith & Family Day, Autism Awareness Day and, following the Fisher Cats/Defenders game, the Merrimack Dodgers play the MoeJoe Red Sox in a Granite State Baseball League game.
