Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Infielder Chris Malec delivered a two-run home run in the first inning, and Trenton held off Reading 3-2 on Wednesday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton snapped its three-game skid, and has won three of its last five games against Reading.
Trenton took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Reading Starting Pitcher Vance Worley (7-9). Second baseman Matt Cusick singled with one out. With two outs in the frame, Malec connected on a two-run home run to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. The home run was his seventh of the season. The home run was Trenton's first at Waterfront Park since July 18th.
Reading got a run back in the third inning. With one out, Center fielder Quintin Berry walked. Left fielder Michael Spidale followed with a single to advance Berry to second base. Right fielder Domonic Brown then drove Berry home with an RBI single to make it 2-1. Trenton added an insurance run in the eighth inning off of Reading Reliever Scott Mathieson. Third baseman Justin Snyder doubled with one out. He moved to third base on a wild pitch, and then scored on a sacrifice fly RBI by Center fielder Austin Krum. Reading cut the gap to 3-2 in the top of the ninth inning on a lead-off home run by Designated Hitter Steve Susdorf off of Thunder Reliever Jose Valdez. But, Valdez recovered to retired the final three batters to notch his ninth save of the season.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Jeremy Bleich (3-5) hurled five innings and scattered six hits and one run to pick up the win. Trenton Reliever Kanekoa Texeira came on for Bleich and struck out five over two innings. Worley allowed only four hits and two runs over seven innings to take a tough-luck loss. Trenton Second baseman Matt Cusick had his first two-hit game for the Thunder in the win.
Trenton and Reading play the rubber game of their three-game series on Thursday night. RHP Zach McAllister (5-4, 2.25) will start for Trenton against Reading LHP Yohan Flande (2-2, 4.50). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. To hear the radio highlights of tonight's game, check out the Thunder Cast at http://thunderpodcast.wordpress.com/
