New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - Rene Tosoni homered in the first inning and the Rock Cats never looked back as the pitching staff turned in a fine performance to down Erie, 4-1 on Wednesday night.
Tosoni slugged a solo home run over the right field wall - hit 13th of the season - in the first inning to put the Rock Cats on the board. Tosoni struck again in the third, this time with a double to center that knocked in Brandon Roberts, who had singled in the previous at-bat.
The Rock Cats struck again in the fourth. Lis started the inning off with a base hit to right field but Toby Gardenhire grounded into a double play. Brian Dinkelman kept the inning alive with a single to right and Whit Robbins followed with a line drive into center. Yancarlos Ortiz then reached base on an error by Erie first baseman Ryan Strieby that allowed Dinkelman to score.
Rock Cats starter Mike McCardell kept the SeaWolves scoreless through the first four innings, but he ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. Danny Worth led off the inning with a single and Andy Dirks followed with a double to put Worth on third. McCardell came back to strike out Cale Iorg and forced Brennan Boesch to groundout to second base, but the grounder allowed Worth to cross the plate for Erie's first run of the game.
McCardell (2-1) limited the SeaWolves to one run on four hits through five innings. He gave way to Carlos Gutierrez, who tossed a scoreless sixth despite allowing two hits. Frank Mata added two shutout innings before Alex Burnett, who will serve as the Rock Cats' closer with the departure of Anthony Slama. Burnett notched his third save of the season.
Ramon Garcia (2-3) scattered seven hits and allowed two earned runs in six innings to suffer the loss.
