Defenders Fall to Akron
August 12, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- For the second consecutive night Connecticut struggled to deliver with runners in scoring position therefore falling again to Akron by the final of 7-4 Wednesday night at Dodd Stadium.
The Aeros delivered four consecutive hits with the final being a three run bomb over the right-field wall by 3B-Lonnie Chisenhall in the third and Akron insured themselves of a series win by taking game two of a three game set.
Akron grabbed an early lead in the second with back to back doubles by RF-John Drennen and 2B-Jared Goedert to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead.
For Aeros' starter LHP-Scott Barnes (1-0) everything went up against him before the first pitch. Barnes made his Double-A debut in front of family and friends since he's from nearby Chicopee, MA but the biggest obstacle of all, he knew every guy he was facing since he was recently apart of a trade that sent 1B-Ryan Garko to San Francisco and Barnes to Cleveland.
With all that in starring Barnes in the eye, he was stellar pitching a solid five innings allowing two earned runs with his only miscue of the night coming on a two run homer by 1B-Brett Pill in the third which was just one of four hits allowed and he fanned five while earning his first win.
Defenders' starter RHP-Daryl Maday (5-4) didn't fair as well, taking the loss even though he celebrated his 24th birthday. Maday allowed five earned runs off of nine hits, walked a pair and struck out four in six innings of work.
Connecticut would trim the lead to 5-3 in the sixth when LF-Brad Boyer scored on a 2B-Jared Goedert error after leading off with a double but that was a close as they would come. The best chance for the Defenders came in the eighth when they plated one run off a DH-Tyler LaTorre RBI single but fell victim to a 1-3 double play to end the inning.
Akron's Josh Judy earned his sixth save with a quick ninth allowing just one hit.
The Defenders will seek out a lone win in the three game set tomorrow at 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium. Connecticut's young stud, LHP-Madison Bumgarner (7-1) takes the bump for the first time versus Akron who will counter with LHP-Eric Berger (0-1).
Thursday is also "Thirsty Thursday" at the ballpark with specials on Sam Adams and a FREE Pint Glass Giveaway (21 & older) as well as Comcast Night where Comcast customers can show their bill and receive four (4) FREE tickets. It's also WCTY 97.7FM "Roll in the Dough," night where fans can win a chance to earn some cash!
