Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock - The Arkansas Travelers lost Tuesday night 5-2 against the Springfield Cardinals at Dickey-Stephens Park. The Travs picked up seven hits, but couldn't get the big hits when they needed it. The Travs bullpen also didn't help itself, giving up five hits and eight walks.
The Travs first half record finishes at 26-44 after the loss, and Springfield improved to 38-32.
The Travs started right-hander Jeremy Thorne (2-4) who picked up his fourth loss after giving up four runs on three hits and seven walks in 5.1 innings. Springfield started Scott McGregor (1-0) who picked up the win in his double-A debut, throwing 7.2 innings giving up four hits on two hits. Eduardo Sanchez (11) took over in the bottom of the ninth inning leaving the tying run at the plate for the save.
The game was scoreless after four innings, but then the Cards put up the first run. In the top of the fifth Jose Garcia hit a one out double followed by three walks to Daryl Jones, Pete Kozma and Matt Carpenter bringing in the first run. Steven Hill came to the plate and lined to third for the second out. Tyler Henley grounded to second base to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth the Cards picked up right where they left off scoring three more runs. Aaron Luna led off with a walk, and was followed by a single from Adron Chambers. Curt Smith flew out to center for the first out. Luna and Chambers moved up on a wild pitch, putting runners on second and third with one out. Garcia came up and hit a single down the third place line scoring both runners making the score 3-0. Jones struck out for the second out, but Kozma hit a double that scored Garcia for the third run of the inning. Carpenter came to the plate and flew out to right to end the inning.
The Travs got their first run in the bottom of the seventh to break the shutout. Jeremy Moore led things off with a single to center. Julio Perez lined out to short for the first out. Efren Navarro came to the plate and grounded to second, but he came up early and let the ball go straight through his legs. On the error Moore moved to third putting runners on the corners with one out. Abel Nieves flew out to right field, but it was deep enough to get the first Travs run across the plate. Roberto Lopez came up next and lined to center for the final out.
The Travs added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Cards got two quick outs when Alberto Rosario and Clay Fuller grounded to third for the first two outs. Andrew Romine was next and he walked followed by a single to right by Kevin Ramos. Romine advanced to third on the hit, and when the right fielder attempted to throw him out the ball went over the head of the third basemen soaring into the dugout. Romine was sent home on the errant throw making the score 4-2. Moore was next to the plate and he was struck out looking for the final out of the inning.
Sanchez entered the game in the bottom of the ninth to try to close the door on the Travs. The Travs picked up two more unearned runs but it wouldn't be enough to get the win.
The Travs will return to action on Wednesday against the Springfield Cardinals. Right-hander Ryan Braiser (5-6, 6.54) will most likely make the start against the Cards lefty Nick Additon (3-5, 5.06). The game will start at 7:10 and gates will open at 6.
