Midland RockHounds News Release
Okay, we don't have a band but, if we did, they would be taking the field. It's "halftime" for the Texas League.
Tuesday night's game at Citibank Ballpark marked the end of the first half, with all eight Texas League clubs going back to 0-0 when they take the field Wednesday night. The "all-star break" will come six games into the second half, with the RockHounds hosting the all-stars next Wednesday night (June 30) at Citibank Ballpark.
Frisco, first half champions in the South Division, had dropped 6-of-7 games coming into Tuesday night's contest, three of the losses to the RockHounds. The RoughRiders also had their ace, Blake Beavan, on the mound and his team "owed him" a good ballgame. Beavan, who is a native of Irving and grew up almost literally in the shadow of the Ballpark in Arlington, ranked third in the league with a 2.61 ERA. But, in his first three June starts, the RoughRiders scored a total of ZERO runs!
Marcus Lemon made sure that streak would end, leading off the game with a solo home run to the short porch in right field. The RoughRiders added two more in the second, then took control with a 3-run fifth inning.
The RockHounds rallied back with one in the seventh and two in the eighth, then put the first two runners on base in the ninth, but could not cash in. The 'Hounds actually out-hit Frisco, but also grounded into four double plays (each of them "4-6-3"), including a game-ending DP in the ninth.
The 'Hounds finished the half 35-35, in a very tightly bunched South Division (see above).
Eight Men Out: One of the more interesting "stats" from the first half is eight. That's the number of players on the RockHounds disabled list as the second half begins. Taking the M*A*S*H factor into consideration, 35-35 is a pretty solid half, with the RockHounds winning 8-of-their-last-12 games.
Now ... please enjoy the sound of our marching band.
