Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Travelers cut a 7-0 deficit to 7-6, but lost by that score to the Frisco RoughRiders on Saturday night at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Trailing 7-0 in the sixth, Travs 3B Drew Maggi lined a 2-run single to center to get Arkansas on the board. 2B Sherman Johnson also came down to score in the frame on a RHP Lendy Castillo balk.
With the score still 7-3 in the eighth, Johnson drew a one out walk, Maggi reached on an error and CF Blake Gailen lined a ball down the third base line with Johnson and Maggi running on the play. The fair ball was touched by a fan which made the play dead on interference. Both Johnson and Maggi looked like they were going to score on the play with Gailen sliding into third, but the umpiring crew assembled near third and determined that Maggi was to go back to third and Gailen to second. The RBI double made it a 7-4 game. After a strikeout, DH Michael Snyder blasted a two-out, two-run double off the top of the left-center field wall to bring the Travs within one (and bury the hatchet on the fan obstruction play). After RHP David Martinez (S,10) was brought on by Frisco, LF D'Arby Myers looped a pop-up on the first pitch to end the threat with Snyder at second.
LHP Mike Antonini (L, 1-1) surrendered two runs in the first inning and four in the fifth (two inherited runners scored) in his first loss with the Travs. The southpaw retired 11 of 12 batters between the RBI single in the first and the five-run fifth. In total, Antonini worked 4.2 innings and allowed six runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
RHP Kyle Winkler worked in relief of Antonini and allowed a run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
LHP Scott Snodgress (1.2 IP) and RHP Danny Reynolds (IP) pitched scoreless relief to follow.
RHP Edwar Cabrera (W, 2-1) earned the victory with five shutout frames for Frisco, his longest start of 2015.
Gailen finished 2-for-4 with the double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base.
Johnson walked twice to extend his consecutive games reaching base at least twice streak to five straight. He also scored twice to up his league-leading total to 59 runs scored.
Arkansas finished 3-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The 'Riders went 5-for-15.
Travs C Stephen McGee was lifted from the game in the top of the fifth with right hamstring tightness.
With the loss, the Travelers' three-game winning streak was snapped as they fell to 44-41 and 8-8 in the second half. Arkansas and Frisco will play game two of the three-game series on Sunday at Dickey-Stephens Park. Sunday is Operation: Military Appreciation and Broadcast From the Stands where fans are welcome to join Robbie Aaron and Michael West as guests during the broadcast. First pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m.
