Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks battled out the 6-4 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 6,078 fans at Whataburger Field on Saturday night. Winners of six of their last eight games, the Cardinals remain in 1st place in the North Division Second Half Standings.
The Cardinals (9-7, 39-47) jumped in front in the top of the first against RHP Michael Feliz. CF Charlie Tilson led off the game with a groundrule double to right field. One out later, Tilson took third on a groundout, before darting home when Feliz fired a wild pitch, opening the 1-0 lead for the Cardinals.
Springfield RHP Corey Baker dealt a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the first, but Corpus Christi (8-8, 56-30) tied it in the bottom of the second. With one away, DH Jon Kemmer pushed a solo home run to left field, evening it at 1-1.
Kemmer and the Hooks struck again in the bottom of the fourth to seize their first lead. Leading off the inning, Kemmer ripped a double. He moved to third base on a groundout, before coming home on an RBI sacrifice fly from SS Jio Mier for the 2-1 Hooks lead.
After an RBI single by 3B Colin Moran in the bottom of the fifth stretched the Hooks lead to 3-1, the Cardinals swung back in front in the top of the sixth. Facing LHP Reymin Guduan (W, 1-1), 1B Jonathan Rodriguez and C Michael Ohlman drew consecutive walks to start the rally. One out later, SS Aledmys Diaz demolished a three-run home run to left field, lifting the Cardinals into the 4-3 advantage with his fourth homer of the year.
The Hooks, however, had a quick retort, plating a pair in the bottom of the sixth against LHP Ryan Sherriff (L, 0-1). With one away, 1B Conrad Gregor reached safely on an error, before back-to-back singles from Mier and LF Danry Vasquez to load the bases. C Brett Booth came through with a two-run single, plating Gregor and Mier to propel the Hooks back into the lead, 5-4.
Corpus Christi dealt the final blow in the bottom of the seventh. With one out and the bases empty, 2B Jack Mayfield sent a solo shot to left field, padding the Hooks lead to 6-4.
Cardinals RHP Josh Lucas, just transferred to Springfield from High-A Palm Beach today, kept the Cardinals close with 1.2 scoreless innings of relief in his Double-A debut. However, the Hooks countered with their final 1.1 scoreless relief innings from RHP Jandel Gustave (S, 11), closing the 6-4 win for Corpus Christi.
