Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks took the middle game of the series, 6-3, against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,308 fans at Whataburger Field on Sunday evening.
The Cardinals (9-8, 39-48) jumped in front early, striking against RHP Kyle Westwood (W, 6-3) in the top of the first inning. DH Charlie Tilson opened the game with an infield single, before swiping his way to second base. After a fly out and a walk, 1B Jonathan Rodriguez ripped an RBI single inside the third base line, scoring Tilson from second for the 1-0 Springfield lead.
Cardinals RHP Andrew Morales (L, 4-5) dealt a quick and scoreless opening inning, but the Hooks (9-8, 57-30) responded in the bottom of the second. Leading off the inning, 1B A.J. Reed pulled a double to right field, before moving to third base on a single from 3B Colin Moran. C Alfredo Gonzalez tied it with an RBI single, scoring Reed and advancing Moran to second. After Cardinals C Alberto Rosario picked off Moran from second base, LF Danry Vasquez knocked a base hit to put two on with one away. Morales dug in with a strikeout of SS Chan-Jong Moon, but CF Brett Phillips brought in both runners with a two-out, two-run single to lift the Hooks into the 3-1 lead.
Corpus Christi stretched the advantage with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one on and one down, DH Jon Kemmer pulled a two-run homer to right field, opening a 5-1 advantage for the Hooks.
Morales finished his outing with two perfect innings in the fifth and sixth, keeping Corpus Christi at five runs. The right-hander struck out a season-high eight batters, including each of his last two to end the sixth.
Following Morales's final frame, the Cardinals chipped the deficit down in the top of the seventh. With one down and the bases clear, RF David Washington launched a solo home run to right-center field, bringing the Cardinals within three runs, 5-2.
The Hooks, though, got the run right back in the bottom of the seventh against LHP Iden Nazario. Kemmer started the stanza with a walk, before Nazario put down the next two batters. Moran, however, lined a two-out RBI double to left field, bringing in Kemmer from first base to increase the Hooks lead back to four runs, 6-2.
The Cardinals refused to go down without a fight, striking again in the top of the ninth. Facing RHP Aaron West, 2B Bruce Caldwell opened the inning with a single. After a fly out, Washington brought Caldwell home with an RBI double to right field, making it just a three-run game once again. West rebounded with a strikeout, before giving way to LHP Chris Cotton (S, 3). Cotton won the battle against LF Derek Gibson, dealing a game-ending strikeout and closing the Hooks 6-3 win.
