Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Traverse City Beach Bums rallied from an early deficit to tie the game in the middle innings before Chase Burch hit a solo homer leading off the eleventh inning, propelling the Beach Bums to a 3-2 win over the Washington Wild Things.
Washington got on the board with the initial tallies of the game in the first as with runners on second and third with two out, Jonathan Erb tripled into the rightfield corner to score Gus Benusa and A. J. Nunziato for a 2-0 Wild Things edge.
Traverse City rallied in the sixth, starting with a leadoff walk by Brian Heere. Ryan Still followed with a double into right-centerfield to score Heere and cut the gap to 2-1. Jose Vargas was the subsequent batter and laced a ball down the leftfield line to score Still and knot the game at 2-2.
Throughout, both pitching staffs were very strong. The two starters, Jacob Clem for the Beach Bums and Gary Lee for Washington each allowed just two runs over six innings of work. From there the bullpens took over as Nick Capito went beyond his normal stellar work for Traverse City, going a career long 4.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits while striking out five. Chandler Barnard was equal to the task for Washington, tossing three shutout innings of his own.
After a scorless tenth for both teams, Burch led off the eleventh with his heroics.
Capito (4-0) earned the win while Nick Cicio (0-3) took the loss for the Wild Things. Scott Mueller recorded the final out of the game for his 12th save.
The Beach Bums return home tomorrow for a Military Monday against the Florence Freedom presented by the Air Force. One lucky active duty or retired military serviceman or servicewoman will be picked at random each Monday to have their seats upgraded to sit at the Traverse City Beach Bums Private Table for the duration of the game. Reid Kelly (6-2, 3.80) will start for the Beach Bums against Alec Lewis (2-5, 3.81) for Florence. For tickets, call 943-0100 or visit tcbeachbums.com.
