JOLIET SLAMMERS (21-29) @ SOUTHERN ILLINOIS MINERS (30-20)
Sunday, July 15 - 5:05 p.m. CT
Rent One Park - Marion, IL
Game #51 - Road Game #24 (21-29), (11-12)
RHP #30 Jacob Sanchez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP #25 David Harden (6-1, 2.86 ERA)
Last time out...
Southern Illinois starting pitcher Cody Hall threw a complete-game, 4-0 shutout against the Slammers Saturday night to tie the series at one apiece. Southern got things rolling right away. With one away in the bottom of the first, Carlos Mendez hit a sacrifice fly to take the 1-0 lead. Chad Maddox gave the Miners an insurance run later in the inning, doubling home Alvaro Ramirez. The game remained scoreless after that until the sixth when Jason Ganek launched a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it 4-0. Following Jim Schult's fantastic Friday night pitching performance, Cody Hall went the whole way for Southern Illinois, holding the Slammers to only three hits while walking three and fanning five. Steven Maxwell was stuck with the loss for Joliet, while Daniel Carela threw hitless relief in the seventh and Mike Barsotti made his debut with the Slammers and threw a 1-2-3 inning.
For Starters...
Jacob Sanchez is making his second career professional start tonight. His first start came on July 6 against Normal and he went six innings of scoreless ball, scattering five hits and striking out three without walking anyone. He picked up the win as the Slammers won the game 9-2. Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.
Going for the series win in the rubber match...
The Slammers are looking to win their second straight series. A win tonight would mark their first series win on the road in a month. They took two of three from River City in O'Fallon June 14-16. In rubber matches this year, the Slammers have a record of 3-4, winning their most recent one right before the All-Star break against Normal.
Dynamic Duo...
All-Stars Abel Nieves and Hector Pellot either hold or share the team lead in 11 major offensive categories this season. Nieves leads the team in batting average at .355, Hits (60), Home Runs (tied with Erik Lis with four), Total Bases (84), OBP (.446), SLG (.497) and OPS (.943). Meanwhile Pellot leads the team in runs scored (39), doubles (14), walks (33), and stolen bases (9).
More walks than strike outs...
Nieves is the only Slammer with more walks (28) than strike outs (16).
Lis on fire in July...
DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis is hitting .417 so far this July, tops on the team.
Offensive woes on the road...
The Slammers are hitting .229 on the road this season compared to .264 at home.
Southern Illinois Connections...
Slammers Manager Bart Zeller and Slammers VP of Baseball Operations/Bench Coach Ron Biga were both on Southern Illinois Manager Mike Pinto's staff as recently as 2010. Southern Illinois LHP Brian Fowler was on the Slammers last season.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 7-23 in games when they make an error. They are 14-6 in games when they do not.
Out-hit...
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 17-7, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 2-21.
