Rockford RiverHawks News Release
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Rockford starter Kyle Schepel pitched five scoreless innings for the decision as the RiverHawks beat Evansville, 4-2, at Bosse Field.
The RiverHawks, who snapped a three-game losing streak, picked up their 500th win in 11 seasons in the Stateline.
Schepel (2-1) struck out five, walked two and scattered three hits. He did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. He has won each of his first two starts for Rockford.
Rockford scored twice off Evansville starter Wynn Pelzer in the third inning and never trailed. After Pelzer retired the first two hitters in order, he walked Javier Herrera. Jet Butler singled to left-center, and Evansville center fielder Matt Sheely misplayed the hit into a run-scoring, two-base error that gave Butler possession of third base. Matt Greener walked and Michael Hur singled in Butler. Pelzer (0-1), who walked five in his first start of the year, was gone after the third inning and took the loss.
In the sixth inning, Rockford doubled the lead on a RBI single by Evan Button and a RBI double by Butler.
Evansville broke the shutout with two runs off Nelson Curry in the ninth inning. Curry left after a single, a hit batsman and walk loaded the bases with nobody out. Closer Garrett Granitz came on and retired Brett Chamberlain on a run-scoring forceout. With two outs, Matt Sheely bunted for a hit to reload the bases and Greg Fontenot singled in a run. Former RiverHawk Luis Parache hit a hard shot up the middle, but Butler, the second baseman, slid on his knee behind the bag to make the stop and flipped to shortstop Ted Obregon for a game-ending force. Granitz picked up his second save.
The rubber match of the three-game series is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Sunday.
The RiverHawks are home to play River City at 7:05 p.m. Monday. Gates open at 6 p.m. for the Lou Bachrodt Chevrolet Youth Clinic. Fans 55 and older get in for free on Senior Citizen Night.
