Normal CornBelters News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, could not muster enough offense in a pitchers' duel and lost to the Traverse City Beach Bums 3-1 on Thursday night at Wuerfel Park.
The Beach Bums scored the game's first run in their first at-bat thanks to a pair of walks and an RBI single by Jeff Flagg.
The Bums added a run in the third when Jose Vargas led off with a triple off the left field wall, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Colligan to increase the lead to 2-0.
The CornBelters finally broke onto the scoreboard in the sixth when Alvaro Ramirez led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored when Pat Trettel's sharp grounder to third was thrown away to cut the Bums lead to 2-1.
The Beach Bums pushed their lead to 3-1 when Jose Vargas led off the eighth with a home run to left, his fourth homer and seventh RBI of the series.
Tyler Stovall (1-5) pitched seven innings but took the loss, while Brooks Belter (6-0) captured the win.
Earlier on Thursday, CornBelters relief pitcher Rich Mascheri was added to the West Division squad for Wednesday's Frontier League All-Star Game at the Corn Crib in Normal. Mascheri is a rookie left-hander from Wauconda, Illinois who completed his collegiate career this spring at Western Illinois University. He has appeared in 14 games with a 1.64 ERA and leads the Belters with five saves.
The CornBelters conclude their nine-game road trip with a three-game weekend series at Joliet beginning on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field with a 6:50 pre-game on WJBC.com. Right-hander Daniel Britt (3-3, 4.14 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for the CornBelters. The series continues with a 6:05 p.m. game on Saturday and a 2:05 p.m. game on Sunday before the CornBelters begin the Frontier League All-Star Game activities presented by State Farm on Monday. The annual All-Star Luncheon and Home Run Derby are planned for Tuesday, and the game itself is at 6:30 Wednesday with several activities planned around and during those events.
