Rockford RiverHawks News Release

WASHINGTON, Pa. - Kyle Schepel took a no-hit bid to the sixth inning in his first professional start and earned the decision as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Washington Wild Things, 5-2, Thursday at Consol Energy Park.

Schepel (1-1) struck out a career-high seven and walked two over six innings. He held the Wild Things to a run on two hits.

Rockford pitching held Washington to five hits each night of a three-game series. The RiverHawks, who won the second and third games of the series, picked up their first road series win of the year. It's their first series win against the Wild Things in nearly four years.

Rockford scored three times off Casey Barnes in the top of the first inning and led the rest of the way. Ted Obregon led off the game with a bunt single, stole second base and advanced to third on Evan Button's infield hit. Javier Herrera singled in Obregon, Jet Butler drove in Button with a sacrifice fly and Herrera scored on Matt Greener's single to left field.

Butler drove in another run on a groundout in the third inning and Devin Shepherd made the score 5-0 with a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth. Barnes (1-3) gave up eight hits over six innings and took the loss.

In the bottom of the inning, Washington's Robbie Garvey broke up Schepel's no-hitter with a leadoff bunt single. He scored from first base when Doug Thennis singled to right field and Herrera missed the cutoff man for an error.

The RiverHawks had lost six straight series to the Wild Things. Their previous series victory was Aug. 5-7, 2008, when they took two of three at Washington.

The RiverHawks are home at 7:05 p.m. Friday to play Gateway. OSF St. Anthony sponsors postgame fireworks.
