
Miners Bring out Brooms at Home

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners swept the River City Rascals by the score of 3-2. Making his first start off the disabled list, Daniel Calhoun pitched 4.2 innings, only giving up two hits and one run. He walked one and struck out four in a no-decision.
Calhoun retired the first twelve Rascals of the game, but River City took an early 1-0 lead off Calhoun with a base hit and RBI by Rascals short stop Matt Serna. The Miners tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off Rascals starter Keli'i Zablan with a sacrifice fly by Will Block to make it a 1-1 game.
The Miners took a 2-1 lead with a base hit and RBI by Chad Maddox off Zablan in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Rascals tied the game at two off Darrin Tew in the top of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly by Josh Workman. The Miners re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Ken Gregory hit a go-ahead homerun off Rascals reliever Don Lisi to give the Miners a 3-2 lead and to extend his hitting streak to 17 games.
Miners reliever Gabriel Shaw pitched 2/3 of an inning to earn his first win of the season. Ryan Quigley and Dave Whigham both pitched 1/3 of an inning in relief. Albert Ayala earned his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless ninth.
With the win, the Miners improve to 27-18 on the season. The Miners trail Traverse City by four games in the Eastern Division. The Miners will be in Avon, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie Crushers tomorrow for the beginning of a three game set. First pitch will be at 6:05 pm.
