July 5, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL)- The Joliet Slammers left 16 runners on base in their series finale with the Florence Freedom in a 5-4 loss at Silver Cross Field on Thursday night. This marks the second straight series Joliet has been swept at home, their fourth consecutive loss, and the second time in the series with Florence where they blew a lead.
Things started off great for Joliet, pounding four runs across through the first two innings courtesy of two-RBI singles by David Fox and Erik Lis, making it 4-0.
Slammers pitching went on to give up five unanswered runs in the loss. Florence struck in the third with an RBI single by David Harris, and cut the lead in half an inning later when John Malloy slapped a single to bring a run home. The Freedom jumped ahead with three runs in the sixth to take the 5-4 lead off base hits by Jim Jacquot and Pierre LePage.
Tommy Mendoza was solid early in his start, but ended up surrendering four runs in five and two-thirds innings, while Brian Smith gave up the winning runs to the Freedom for the loss. Geoff Brown and Chase Doremus finished the effort.
The Slammers continue the homestand Friday, opening up a series with the last-place Normal CornBelters at 7:05 before heading into the All-Star Break. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
