Gwinnett Stripers News Release

ALLENTOWN, PA - Right-hander Touki Toussaint fired 8.0 scoreless innings Wednesday as the Gwinnett Stripers defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a 5-0 score at Coca-Cola Park.

The only two hits Toussaint allowed came on back-to-back singles in the third inning. He walked four and struck out eight in the contest, lowering his ERA to 1.77 (4 ER in 20.1 IP) over three Triple-A starts.

The Stripers got all the runs they would need in the top of the first as Luis Marte led off the game with a solo homer to left (2) off IronPigs righty Tom Eshelman. It was Marte's second homer in as many games and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The Stripers would add a second run in the inning as Sean Kazmar Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk.

While Toussaint was baffling Lehigh Valley - at one time retiring eight in a row - the Stripers upped the lead to 3-0 as Dustin Peterson drew the second bases-loaded walk of the game in the seventh against reliever Tom Windle.

The Stripers put the game out of reach in the ninth with a crushing blow. Austin Riley began things with a single off reliever Mark Leiter Jr. and Carlos Franco followed with a long two-run homer (13) on a 3-0 pitch to cap the scoring for the day.

Jacob Webb maintained the shutout with a three up, three down bottom of the ninth with one strikeout. It was Gwinnett's ninth shutout of the season, tied for third in the International League.

Eshelman (L, 1-9) went 6.0 innings with six hits, two earned runs and three walks allowed with five strikeouts. Windle pitched 1.0 inning with two hits, one earned run and two walks. Leiter tossed 2.0 innings with three hits, two earned runs and one strikeout.

Marte, Danny Santana, Riley, Franco and Kazmar each had two hits in the game. Franco's two-run blast in the ninth gave him an IL-leading 62 RBIs at the time of publication. Peterson went 0-for-4 to end his 11-game hitting streak.

Eshelman and Dean Anna had the only two hits for the Iron Pigs.

The Stripers (48-54) look to take the series from Lehigh Valley (61-40) Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The Stripers will start righty Wes Parsons (6-2, 2.88) against IronPigs southpaw Ranger Suarez (1-0, 0.57). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:35 p.m.
