Norfolk Tides News Release

The Norfolk Tides split a doubleheader with the Syracuse Chiefs Wednesday, winning game one 2-1 before dropping the nightcap, 8-1.

In the opener, Norfolk got a strong start from John Means and then rallied with two seventh inning runs to walk-off with a 2-1 victory.

Syracuse starter Austin Voth (4-7) carried a 1-0 lead and a one-hitter into the seventh inning, but Pedro Álvarez and Andrew Susac opened the inning with consecutive singles to start the game-winning rally. After a sacrifice bunt from Luis Sardiñas moved the runners up a base, Garabez Rosa greeted reliever Jimmy Cordero with a game-tying single to center that scored pinch-runner Drew Dosch. Mike Yastrzemski then followed with a fly ball to right field, plating Susac well ahead of Alejandra de Aza's throw home to give Norfolk its ninth walk-off victory of the year.

Means fell one out shy of picking up his second consecutive complete game, allowing one run on three hits over 6.2 innings of work. The 25-year-old southpaw threw 60 of his 91 pitches for strikes, and at one point he retired 14 consecutive batters. Means has now turned in seven consecutive Quality Starts, and he's registered 60 strikeouts and just five walks over his last 10 starts.

Donnie Hart (2-0) earned the win after striking out the only batter he faced. Hart has now turned in nine consecutive scoreless appearances with the Tides.

In the nightcap, the Chiefs registered nine hits - five of which went for extra-bases - to roll to an 8-1 victory.

Matt Wotherspoon (2-7) took the loss after allowing three runs on two hits over two innings of work. He struggled with his control, setting a career-high by issuing five walks while throwing just 39 of his 70 pitches for strikes.

Pedro Álvarez doubled and scored Norfolk's lone run, as the Tides saw their season-high winning streak snapped at seven. Norfolk had outscored its opponents 30-15 over the seven-game stretch.

The doubleheader was the result of a rainout in Syracuse on April 15th. Because the rainout occurred in Syracuse, the Chiefs served as the home team in game two despite the game being played at Harbor Park.

The Tides and Chiefs will square off in another doubleheader on Thursday from Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 12:05. Lucas Long (1-0, 1.80) is set to face off against right-hander Jefry Rodriguez (0-2, 7.20) in the opener, while Sean Gilmartin (1-0, 4.50) will make the start for Norfolk in game two.

Notes: Earlier Wednesday, the Orioles recalled RHP David Hess from Norfolk to take the roster spot of LHP Zach Britton, who was traded to the New York Yankees late Tuesday. RHP Cody Carroll, acquired in the trade from New York, was added to Norfolk's roster...Cedric Mullins went hitless in game one, snapping an 11-game hitting streak at Harbor Park...The Tides are now 9-3 in doubleheaders this season...Ryan Meisinger worked a scoreless inning of relief in game two, dropping his ERA to 2.08.
